Antlers (In Velvet), 2025

This sculpture is a rounded form with protruding antlers, and a small mountain and tree framed on it’s crown. It has qualities of both an animal, and environment, and has a peaceful visual quality to it.

Last winter I thought often about deer. I held my body in deer pose during yoga, letting out soft sobs, and found joy in discovering them on trails or in local parks. the sight of one unexpectedly would make my heart jump, and pound. We would stare at each other until one of us broke free. I started to think that their presence could imply safety, and lack of predators in my own surroundings, inducing a sense of calm- or perhaps an acceptance with the chaos of nature. I now think of deer as resilient creatures, harnessing a soft power.

Last summer, from the train window I saw two deer frolicing through a field, underneath a rainbow cast from the irrigation hose. In the summer, the deer are considered to be, ‘in velvet,’ which refers to their soft, growing antlers. Antlers (In Velvet), to me symbolizes the strength and beauty of growth, and making peace with the chaos of our environment.
