This piece was my introduction to fiber sculpture. I was very inspired by the works of Louise Bourgeois at this time. My assignment was to create a new object from this Cabbage Patch Doll. I’d chosen this doll as my starting object, because of my history with it. I had owned this exact doll in my childhood; so destroying it to make something new was a process in itself that is familiar and still valuable in my current practice.
What came out of this was a grotesque animalistic creature with no orifices, and a lot of hair. I had turned this girlish, innocent, desirable doll into … something else. Growing up I was always protesting the color pink, and to this day question the social relevance of beauty standards that women in America are held to. I was questioning misogyny. I was making space for otherness. I wanted them to know, beneath the container of this girl flesh, is a beautiful monster.
