Oregano is the name of this Luchador effigy vessel/sculpture, taken from the potent healing herb. This sculpture has taken on a personality that blends the spiritual with the Earthly, and ferocity with humor. This sculpture possesses both aesthetic and functional pottery elements. Integrating aspects of animal, land and Indigenous Mexican symbolism, this piece is abundant with narrative potential.
I think deeply of what it means to be a Mexican artist at this time. With the rise of ICE and violence toward Mexican-American citizens, it is important to resist the fascist narrative that Mexican immigrants are violent crime do-ers. Oregano is a reminder of our history with this country: that we are a people deeply tied to the labor and land of North America. When I see the desert on Oregano’s back, I think of the souls lost in migration, searching of a better life in this country that rejects us, yet is founded on our exploited labor.
Oregano the luchador fiercely wards off the evil forces of fascism and colonization, with its vibrant color and spiritual power.
