This project is a papel picado, a traditional Mexican craft and storytelling form. I crafted this banner with the intention of displaying stories and experiences from my Mexican family. The stories range in topics from death, labor, joy, nostalgia, and more. The vibrant colors are naturally dyed with plants, like indigo and cochineal. In my family, history is not shared openly, but offered in rare private moments. Papel Picado is a collection of honest stories, a family tree– it’s a tender display of ancestry and heart.
