Rapid Shelterings, 2021

Rapid shelter for customers while our community sleeps on concrete.”

Rapid Shelterings is a banner that is designed to be an intervention between individuals and places of commerce. The banner confronts the physical and political climate during the COVID-19 pandemic. Rapid shelters pictured here are tents or structures built by restaurants, usually situated on urban streets and sidewalks to service customers while maintaining guidelines in place to stop the spread of COVID-19.

The poetic phrase observes the contradiction of providing warm shelters for paying customers, but not for unhoused communities who have required these resources for years. Although this project is dated, it only becomes more apparent that our system of capitalism is antithetical to the care and resources our communities need to thrive.
