This sculpture is comprised of found materials: a buoy from the side of the road, produce netting, lace, and a lock of hair. Suspended from the ceiling, with closed eyes, this creature, or sculpture, sleeps gently. She has a peaceful and curious presence.
I created this piece when my friends and I decided to do an “art train,” project. Basically, one person makes art and passes it to the next person who creates artwork inspired by the original, eventually passing their secondary work on- this third person having no idea what the original looks like, continues to make work inspired by the secondary, and so on.
I volunteered to be the first person in the train, because I was already working on a painting and it seemed easy. Then, walking home one day, I was inspecting this pile of trash for any treasures, and saw a buoy. I found its presence among discarded non-perishables and clothing odd. But the round, hillside shape of it captivated me- and I knew I would keep it, and transform it into a work of art for the art train. I went home and gathered materials from the sentimentals box under my bed: my roommate’s braid, lace I found on the ground, and the kitchen, for the produce netting i’d been using to carry my lunch. I made this, thing, this confusing, curious, odd-little-thing, and I knew my friends would be stumped and we would make some really weird art together. I still haven’t seen the end of the art train, but this spontaneous feeling to make weird art that makes no sense–has actually inspired a lot of my ceramics practice, and I see this little hillside shade everywhere now. and I’ve been making creatures for quite some time now (like, Hairy, 2018).
