Tire Sculpture, 2025

This sculpture is a three dimensional form, designed to be hung on the wall. The ovular shape, dark oil slick glaze, and surface design allude to a rubber tire. There is a blushing bronze face, or spirit, emerging from the earthly toned center.

When designing this piece, I originally was focused on polarity: light/dark & birth/death. During the construction, I was lead down other paths which led to creative decisions like designing for wall mounting, and the inner ring, or what (to me) looks like a vulva- these creative wanderings led me to the sculpture I have documented. It has a strong presence that appears absurd, but beckons attention and introspection.

Tires and cars are an oddly significant part of my life, tired to family and occupation. My father has worked for a tire sales company my whole life, and my mother’s parents worked in a different tire sale company. The smell of a tire shop is nostalgic and comforting for me. In addition, my father’s extended family own an auto repair and sale store. The family business seems to be automotive- ironic for someone who has had nightmares of driving since five years old.

I think often about working with the material of rubber and scrap tires. I’m interested in their sculptural capacity. However in this piece, I explore what meaning arises from focusing on material, and form. Now that the piece is complete, the sculpture will exude its own meaning and experience to other viewers.
