For two years I was apart of the Gallery Educator program at the University of Michigan Museum of Art (UMMA). With my cohort, I designed our tour curriculum, collaborated with a local writing center and volunteers, led museum tours, conducted outreach visits, and led post-tour reflection. By facilitating art experiences, I fostered creativity and collaboration while cultivating a sense of growth and belonging. Not to mention, I got to hear some awesome observations, perspectives, and stories from students. I cannot stress enough the importance of spaces like museums to provide supplemental art education to school districts where funding and engagement is low for the arts. The arts are not a luxury, they are a necessity for education and expression.
Alongside my gallery education work for UMMA, I produced video content and designed coloring pages to compliment our education program. The video content was utilized in classroom outreach to prepare students for their upcoming visits, and promote a sense of familiarity and ownership of the museum and collection. The coloring pages were designed as a simple reflective engagement activity after their tour, and served as a souvenir of their visit. Both of designs strengthened engagement and connection with art.
